Long Distance Relationship
My boyfriend and I met online. We live 2000 miles from each other and have known each other over a year. We have been dating for about 6 months now. It began as mentorship of sorts. I was in the midst of several issues and was in need of support and encouragement and he was there to lend me that support. I was facing some tough life decisions and he was there for me to listen and be the voice of reason when I was too tired to reason for myself. For the first time in my life I had found someone who cared about my dreams and encouraged me to reach for them, whether or not they were inclusive of them. The fact that he regards my personal growth to be of utmost importance is proof to me that we have the kind of love that could and does transcend time and distance.
Although our current responsibilities and personal ambitions will not allow us to have a "normal" relationship we made a conscious choice to pursue this relationship. Our goal has never been to have a common love, we are seeking one that continues to inspire each of us to do and be the people we choose to be and share ourselves with the other in whatever capacity that we can.
We communicate daily either by phone, internet or both and we take turns flying to see each other as often as possible. We average about 6 to 8 weeks between visits which last approx- imately 5 days at a time. We make huge efforts to stay close emotionally and since we are both in our thirties and very busy, we know that what we share is uncommon and worthwhile and not something that we should pass up, just because there are obstacles. I will leave you with a particularly inspiring passage from a letter that we exchanged several months ago:
" The support and caring I feel between us is not based on the superficialness of convenience and proximity. I value so much the fact that we both choose to make the effort to maintain the connection through which our thoughts and feelings flow. I benefit daily from the notion that there is someone out there who is on my side and always wants to share in my accomplishments and helps to diminishes my disappointments and shortcomings."
In conclusion- not a day passes without getting an "I love you" message on my pager or my answering machine or in email or some other form of communication. Our correspondences always ends with a five word phrase that sums it all up.
"I wish here was there."
