Long Distance Relationship
Three and a half years into a lohg distance relationship, and nine weeks since I had last seen my boyfriend, I found your book. I thought I was reading my own diary!
I am currently in the middle of a serious "detachment" phase, but couldn't put my finger on what the problem was until I read your description. In hindsight, I realize that each time we have gone through a "rough spot" was after an extended period of separation.
It took your book to help me see the pattern. Like you, we have vowed, over and over again, not to go more than 3 or 4 weeks without seeing each other. Unfortunatley, neither of us work 9-5 jobs and are very involved with building our careers. Ironically, some of the very same shared goals and values that brought us together are now keeping us apart. As much as we love each other, it's always a test of our relationship when, yet another weekend is eaten up with business travel that keeps us hundreds or thousands of miles apart.
Our goal is to be living together within 6 months and married within a year, but it's sometimes hard to believe when just carving out a weekend is all but impossible. I wish we could plan our time better. I think it would be easier knowing that in 5 weeks we would spend a weekend together, but with our career demands, we often don't know if we will be free for the weekend until Friday afternoon!
I console myself with the knowledge that we are both committed to making this work. After all, in the three and a half years we have been together, the most time we have spent together at one time is 6 days! We manage with three to five calls each day (often just a quick, between meetings "I love you"), lots of voice mail messages, emails, pages, surprise cards and letters and most of all, a stubborn committment to being together.
We both have outrageous phone bills, but if we added up the money we save on dinners, movies, theater tickets and other costs associated with "regular" dating, it's not much different. Thank you for putting into words all the emotions that are involved with long distance relationships, it's so good to know that I'm not crazy, and that I'm not alone!
