Long Distance Relationship
Story of the Week

When I first met Greg, it was in the most normal of circumstances and I never ever thought our relationship would end up being what it is now. We went to the same high school, but different grades. At that time we met I was a sophomore. He was a year older than I was, but we were in the same chorus class. I remember the first time I talked with him that he struck me for some reason. He came up to me and formally introduced himself. No guy had ever done that before! I remember walking away from that conversation feeling that I had never met a guy like him before. However, it was not until almost 2 years later that we started dating.

On a chorus trip to Virginia, we realized that our relationship had become something more, and on May 2, 2001, he formally asked me out. I remember that day as being the happiest of my life. We connected in a way that I never thought possible. Sometimes, I felt he could read my mind. He could always tell what mood I was in or if something was bothering me. I always felt so safe in his arms. However, a dark cloud hung over us that summer. Greg was leaving for college in a few short months. I thought we might break it off and just see other people, but as August came around the corner, I knew I couldn't let him go. He couldn't break it off either. So, we agreed to do what most people think is impossible: a long distance relationship. This is probably the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life. I practically live for those moments when Greg can hold me in his arms again, and I count down the days until I can see him again. We see each other about once a month.

Now that we are both in college, we each visit each other's college once a semester and we see each other over breaks. During the summer, we make the most of our time together. Last year, we both worked in the same restaurant just to have more time together! But, what I really want to stress is that although our relationship is difficult and sometimes horribly lonely, I can't imagine my life without him. The times we spend together completely make up for the moments when tears pour down my face because I miss him so much. We talk on the phone for hours at a time everyday, and we even have webcams now so that we can actually "see" each other. We find joy in the little things now such as talking on the phone or aol instant messenger. Our relationship has been strong now for three years. I fall in love with him more and more each day.

Although I wish that things could be different, that he went to same school as I do, or that he was just a few miles closer, I know that in the end, the pain is worth his love. I know that sometime soon, a light will shine at the end of the tunnel and this distance will finally end. But, when that time comes, I know I will be able to look back and be proud of what we did because we conquered the impossible. We had a long distance relationship and we made it work.

I can't wait for that time to come. So, now we roll with the punches and be thankful for what we have. We have our hard times, but we pull through them. I miss him terribly, but I know that Greg and our love are worth it.
