Long Distance Relationship
Distance is only a physical thing. Love keeps people together in mind and spirit. It is only your desires of touch that make long distance relationships hard and the emotions of doing things together as one that make you as a couple happy.
My girlfriend and I have literally seen the world together. We are both in the Air Force and traveled in a group called Tops in Blue. An Air Force Entertainment Unit. We were together for an entire year, 24 hours a day. You name the most popular tourist places in the world and we have been there. From London to Paris, Rome, Hawaii, Alaska to Afghanistan and all the way north to Greenland. What a wonderful experience we shared, which is irreplaceable only by GOD and the heavens above. But then the day came where our tour ended, March 31, 2003. We have been separated because we are not married, and in the military you must be married our lucky to get stationed together. Otherwise it is not my decision ( for the most part) where I get stationed. She lived only a short 6 hour drive from me. And since then we have not went 3 weeks without seeing each other. It has been difficult with all the hours on the road and all the nights in the hotels in vacant areas that are only known by truckers.
We have went through some difficult times arguing and not knowing how to deal with the distance and emotions that go along with it. I prayed one evening for a very long time and got the answer that I hoped for. I felt it was time to take a big step in our relationship as well as a humongous commitment in my life. I decided to ask her for her hand in marriage. So I took a trip to St. Louis to ask for her fathers blessing. I have to tell you, this is one of the most respectful and hardest conversations I have had IN MY LIFE! I didn't know how to ask him so I just closed my eyes and told him I had something really important to ask. Everything worked out perfectly. So with his permission I thought how do you make the most important question in a woman's life unforgettable. She was taking a Marriage and Family Class coincidentally. I called secretly to her teacher set up a way to surprise her. On the last day of class I had the teacher hand out a note to everyone present. Then gave a special note to Angie as she walked in the room. Everyone's note read " This is a surprise. Behind the door Stands Ian ( Angies Boyfriend ) whom is about to propose to her. Basically this was to explain the situation for them and what was about to happen. The note that was given to Angie was her own proposal explaining everything my heart desires in a wife and how she fulfills me. In more words of course. So she was reading along and had no clue what was happening and just figured it was another marriage and family class assignment. Then at the end it says my time has come...then I walked in the door and asked her to be my wife. It was amazing, she said yes. Now we have been engaged since October 15, 2003 and plan on getting married in March of 2005.
She now has recently moved to Georgia. I still live in Oklahoma City( not by choice). Which now is a much longer drive. I have to fly which makes it even more expensive and as most people know, military members do not get paid much as it is. But I still try and fly at least once a month to go and visit. We are still in a long distance engagement and I am trying to get stationed with her in Georgia. Hopefully it will be soon.
I just want to say long distance relationship can work! It is up to you and your partner whether or not you are strong enough to be committed and desire to be loving and faithful. It does get difficult...especially in disagreements from misunderstandings. But those great hugs and kisses are priceless. I must say....I do not know what heaven is like, I can only dream but those first few moments when you are in each others presence again after a long period of time, is the BEST FEELING IN THE WORLD. Of course I am not a father yet so I don't know what that's like. I can not wait until the day I can proudly say she is my wife. I continue to try and be the best fianc in a long distance relationship I can. I love you Baby!
