Long Distance Relationship
In 1985 we were introduced. His best friend lived in the same city that I did and he came to Memphis for a visit. My best friend was madly in love with his friend. She wanted to spend time with him that weekend and in order to do so she had to find someone to be with "the visitor". She volunteered my services without even asking me but being a best friend, I agreed. I met him and within days was head over heels in interest. Our best friends had a fight that weekend and did not want to see each other any more but Derrick (my mate) borrowed his best friends car and we spent the entire weekend getting to know each other. We dated for 2 years before the distance began to errode the relationship. In 1997, we gave up. We kept in contact from time to time but only cordially. I went to Chicago for a convention in 1997 and thought I would look him up. I went through ropes hoops and all other kinds of contraptions to find his new number. It had been ten years.
I really believe it was meant because I remembered a friend he had mentioned in passing and found this person's number who in turn found Derrick and we met up at my hotel and went to dinner. It was like we had never been apart. It took me 10 years to realize that he was the jewel he is. Looking at him now, I realize that I have been blessed to get that second chance that people often speak of as the one that got away.
We have been dating (long distance again) since that Sunday night in July 1997. We are really two different kind of people. Where I am romantic and sentimental, he is practical and analytical. Most people that know us think we are too different but we say that he is the one that keeps me grounded and I give him wings. He is the one who gives conclusive answers and I supply the dreams. We are different we admit. But others must understand. That while I am the ocean. He is the sand.
We try and see each other on a regular basis but I think with both our busy lives, it is very comfortable for us to not have the local pressures of in-town relationships AND when we are given some time together, we make the best of it because we know that it is limited and the memories we make our what we have to live with until the next time. Thank God for email though!
