Long Distance Relationship
Living in Dallas, 23, down in the dating dumps, I had just broken up with a law school clerk from Tyler, Texas. Up on my soapbox, I proclaimed that I had had enough with guys and would do nothing more than focus on my career, travelling and running. While standing on my soapbox, my roommate said to me, "Don't you have a date this weekend?" "Yes, but it is lunch, it won't go anywhere. It's just going to be a free meal for me." The The date on Saturday just happened to be a blind date set up by the recent law clerk. The blind date was his boss, an attorney in the district court he had been clerking in. He seemed nice, knew the story and just wanted to have lunch.
We had lunch that day and have been dating ever since, four and a half years. He now lives back in his home town, a small town in east Texas, where he practices with his father. He has actually been there for over three years we have been together.
His life during the week consists of playing basketball with the guys on Monday night and hanging out with his parents the rest of the week. My life in contrast is everything a young, single, athletic 27-year old would be. I go to movies, have dinner with friends, go out on "friend" dates and attend charity functions.
We could not be more opposite had we been trying. We have no idea when or if we will ever live in the same city. Our major issue seems to be that I could live anywhere, except a small town of 5,000 people in the middle of nowhere and he could live anywhere except a major metropolitan area. I am the director of recruiting and associate development for one of the largest law firms in Texas and he works with his dad and they share a secretary. My office overlooks downtown Dallas and his, well, you cannot see out of because his office was the old jail and the windows are five feet off the floor encased in cement walls.
We see each other every weekend and really enjoy each other's company. We run golf, play tennis, go to movies, parties and have friends over for dinner. We have combined out group of friends to the point that they all know one another and a few are even dating now.
But, I have to say that some days, I wonder why we do this to each other when we know that inevitably, we will have to face this and really decide whether a 3 hour drive every Friday night and Sunday night is worth it. We miss so much of each other's lives.
