Long Distance Relationship
Here is a brief of my story:
I am a Brazilian born, daughter of Egyptians. My parents immigrated to Brazil in the 1970s, but decided to return to their homeland in 1992, when I had to leave Brazil and start life in Egypt. At the time I was 16. I completed my high school in Egypt. One of my brothers immigrates to the U.S. He lived in Pittsburgh.
In the Islamic community there, my brother met my husband Michael. At the time, he was just signing in with the Marine Corps, about to go boot camp. Michael saw my picture with my brother and asked if I was available. That was in November 1995. Michael called my mother to ask permission if he could call and write to me. She said yes, with the condition that she would read every letter and be by side on the phone. So Michael and I talked on the phone long distance, and I did not even have seen his photo. I just loved his voice.
In April 1996, Michael is off to boot camp. From then on up to July, our contact is only through letters. Lots of letters. I even perfumed them.
Once he was done with boot camp and his Intel school in Virginia, in December 1996 he comes to Egypt. My father goes to pick him up from the airport. We met for the first time in my family home, face-to-face. It was like magic, as if I knew him for the longest time.
December 20 1996, we married in Cairo. I stayed behind until the legal immigration procedures took place. In June 1997, he came back to Cairo to bring me to the States, we came together to our military base in California.
We have been through several military deployments. Today we have 2 sons, one is 2 year old, the other 2 months old. If I could do it all over again, I would.
